Saturday, October 18, through Sunday, October 19, 2008
Leader: Barbara Hoehne, nymphaea123@msn.com, or (505) 262-9059

Join the NMVFO’s annual migration to help the Refuge prepare for the Festival of the Cranes.
Work will include clearing brush from viewing areas, opening and clearing overgrown trail
corridors, improving trail guidance by closing user-created trails, building cairns,
and improving erosion control. Breakfast on Saturday and Sunday and dinner on Saturday
will be served in the Volunteer Center (located behind the Visitor Center) where volunteers
will also meet for briefings and to pick up tools. Volunteers should plan to meet at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday morning at the Volunteer Center for breakfast and to kick off the project. In order
for us to plan for meals and tools, please sign up by Monday, October 13. Exception: RV
campers who want to reserve a space in the Volunteer RV area need to sign up by Friday, October 10 (see below). Come for a day or the entire weekend. Let the Project Leader know if
you are interested in carpooling.
Camping Options: This year volunteers will have expanded camping opportunities for
Friday and Saturday nights! RV/truck campers may request an assigned space in the
Refuge's Volunteer RV camping area if they sign up by Friday, October 10. A limited
number of beds will be available in the bunkhouse on a first-come basis. This is unisex
lodging; volunteers will need to provide their own bedding. Sorry, beds cannot be
reserved or guaranteed except for the cook; volunteers should bring camping
equipment in case the bunkhouse fills up before their arrival. The RV area and
bunkhouse are located near the Volunteer Center. In addition, a group campsite has
been reserved in the Riverside Campground. Tent and truck campers also have the
option of camping in the area near the bunkhouse. Bathrooms with hot showers are
available in the Volunteer Center.
Directions: From the north, take I-25 south to San Antonio exit 139, then route 380
east 0.5 mile, then State Highway 1 south 8 miles to the Refuge. From the south, take
I-25 north to San Marcial, then north on State Highway 1 for 9 miles to the Refuge.
The entrance to the Volunteer Center area is just south of the Visitor Center - watch
for NMVFO signs.
What to Bring: Long-sleeved shirts and long pants, work gloves, sturdy work boots or
shoes, sunhats, sunscreen, insect repellent, raingear, lunches and snacks, bedding or
sleeping bags for the bunkhouse, and drinking water for the trail (2-4 liters
recommended). Campground campers are urged to bring chairs.
