Join us for the first project of the 2008 season! We’ll be in the Gila National Forest, in the central Burro Mountains southwest of Silver City. Our work will consist of maintenance and construction on the Continental Divide Trail northwest of Burro Peak. Activities will include constructing a short segment of new trail, building water bars and other drainage structures, erecting signs and cairns, cutting brush, and building a new gate; we’ll be touching up portions of the trail constructed last summer. The worksite will be about a 1.5-mile hike from our campsite.

Camping will be near the junction of Forest Roads 852 and 136. To get there, take US 180 from Silver City west for approximately 12 miles to a county road called Mangas Valley Road (there’s a green road sign). Take Mangas Valley Road south approximately four miles to where it intersects FR 851 or Red Rock Road, also marked with a green sign. Go south on Red Rock Road about 5.5 miles to its junction with FR 852, or Forest Ridge Road (so marked with a green road sign). Take Forest Ridge Road for approximately three miles to its intersection with FR 136; our campsite will be close by this junction and marked well.

Join us for all 2½ days or whenever you can. We’ll provide light breakfasts all three days, and dinners Saturday and Sunday. Please bring all your other meals and snacks. We’re hoping for mild weather, but it might be on the cold side so bring layerable clothing and an extra blanket or two for sleeping. The Forest Service will provide water, a tent with wood stove, and a backcountry toilet.

Please contact the project leader no later than February 10 to sign up.
