McKnight Canyon Trail

This is not a backpack. McKnight Canyon Trail is located on the western slope of the Black Range in the Gila extending from the Mimbres River to the crest of the Black Range and the boundary of the Aldo Leopold Wilderness. Once popular, the trail has fallen into disuse because of tree blow downs, tread washouts, etc. We will restore the trail by removing obstructions and performing tread maintenance, which may include some rockwork. Tasks for all skill levels are available.

We will camp at McKnight’s Cabin at the head of the canyon. Because the road (FR152) leading to the cabin is only suitable for high-clearance vehicles, we will meet on Saturday at shuttle to the cabin in suitable vehicles. The shuttles will leave at 9:00am and again at 1:00pm. The Office can be reached by taking I-25 to NM Hwy 152, west on Hwy 152 to San Lorenzo, then north 11 miles on NM Hwy 35.

We will be camping above 9000 feet and can expect cool nights and mornings. Daytime temperatures should be in the low 80s. Rain is common this time of year. Group meals will begin the evening of August 30th and end with breakfast Wednesday, September 3.

Any questions can be directed to Wayne Brown. Please sign up by Saturday, August 23.
