It’s finally time to work on our Adopt-A-Trail in the Sandia Mountains, the Pino Trail!
Beginning at the Elena Gallegos Open Space Park, this challenging trail climbs over 2,900
feet in 4.7 miles through the Sandia Mountains Wilderness to the mountain crest, and is
beloved by many hikers and horseback riders. After a beautiful summer and a busy hiking
season, this trail needs some TLC! We have a variety of work for all abilities: stabilizing
erodible slopes, cleaning out existing water bars and installing new ones where appropriate,
maintaining the slope grade of the trail, clearing encroaching scrub oak and other brush, and
removing fallen trees.
The Forest Service will be providing tools, and volunteers are responsible for bringing their
lunch and water. The monsoons will probably have ended by this time, but keep an eye on the
weather forecast and come prepared. Please bring work gloves, as well. Absolutely no dogs.
We will be meeting at the Ellena Gallegos Open Space at 8:30. Please sign up by at least a
week prior to the event.
