West Fork of the Santa Barbara Backpack PulaskiPulaskipulaski

Friday, August 22nd, through Wdnesday August 27th, 2008
Leader: Ray Peale, (505) 473-9670, trpeale@msn.com

Santa Barbara Campground

We'll backpack about 4 miles south out of Santa Barbara campground. This is a good beginner’s backpack as the distance is relatively short and the elevation gain is modest.

The hike and work will be on Trail #25, which is a well-used trail into the heart of the Pecos Wilderness. Work will include removal of tree blow downs, tread improvement, installation of drainage structures, and removal of vegetation encroaching in the trail corridor. All ability levels are welcome and can be accommodated.

The Forest Service will pack in all tools and food. Volunteers will be responsible for carrying in their personal gear including eating utensils, tent, sleeping bag and clothing (including work gloves). Pecos veterans know that the Pecos can be a very wet place, so be sure to bring adequate rain gear. Group meals will begin Friday evening and extend through Wednesday lunch.

Santa Barbara campground can be reached by taking NM 73 south from Penasco. Detailed directions can be obtained from the leader. Please sign up by Friday, August 15.
