McKnight Canyon Trail Map

McKnight's Canyon is located on the remote western slope of the Black Range in the Gila National Forest. The canyon offers both beauty and tranquility that few have been privileged to witness and enjoy. Now is your opportunity to work in this picturesque setting as the VFO returns to the canyon to build upon past year's efforts to construct the McKnight's Canyon Trail. In past years, we have worked out of McKnight's cabin near the ridge of the Black Range and labored down the canyon. This year, we'll work at a lower elevation (with perhaps less precipitation) and work to construct the trail going up the canyon.

The project requires a backpack of up to five miles with an elevation gain of approximately 1000 ft. We'll meet at the Wilderness (Mimbres) Ranger Station at 8:30 a.m. on Wed, May 26. The Ranger Station is about 250 miles from Albuquerque and is reached by driving south on I-25 to State Hwy 152 (south of Truth or Consequences). Go west on Hwy 152 to San Lorenzo and the intersection with State Hwy 35. Go north on Hwy 35. The Ranger Station is on the west side of Hwy 35.

All tools will be provided by the Forest Service. Group meals will be provided beginning with the evening meal on Wednesday and continue through Monday lunch. Volunteers should bring work gloves, and appropriate work clothes (long sleeve shirt, pants, and over the ankle boots) and all necessary personal camping gear (tent, sleeping bag, eating utensils). Please sign up by Friday, May 21, and don’t hesitate to call Ray if you need more information.
