The VFO is known for projects taking volunteers to areas of New Mexico that otherwise would never occur to them to go on their own. This is such a project. Black Canyon is perhaps one of the most remote areas of New Mexico. We will see few other hikers and experience a true wilderness environment.
We will be working on trail #72 which climbs east within Black Canyon, eventually reaching the crest of the Black Range and the Continental Divide Trail. The hike in to our base camp gains 2000 feet elevation in about 8 miles (so come physically and mentally prepared for a good work-out!) We'll be reconstructing, rerouting, and maintaining the current trail. Interest in all types of trail work can be accommodated.
Volunteers will be expected to pack in their own personal gear including tent, sleeping bag, work gloves and clothes, eating utensils, and all personal items necessary for a 5-night backpack. Meals will be provided starting Wednesday evening through Monday lunch (volunteers will provide their own lunch for the hike in on Wednesday). A cold supper will be provided on Wednesday due to an anticipated "long day".
Black Canyon can be reached via FR150 (the Geronimo Trail). From Albuquerque, go south on I-25 to exit 89 and NM Hwy 52. Take Hwy 52 through Cuchillo and Winston to the junction of NM 59. Go west on Hwy 59 to the Beaverhead work center and then south on FR 150 to Black Canyon. From Silver City, go east on NM 152 to NM 35 at San Lorenzo. Go north on NM 35 until the junction of FR 150 is reached and go north on FR 150 to Black Canyon. Total distance from Albuquerque is 190 miles and from Silver City, 35 miles.
It is recommended that volunteers plan to camp at Black Canyon on the evening of Tuesday, May 24 due to both the length of the drive and hike in on Wednesday. Please sign up by Friday, May 20. Don't hesitate to contact the project leader, Ray Peale, should you have additional questions.
