Ft. Bayard Trail System Map

Shake off the cobwebs and the winter doldrums… start the 2011 season with a bang by joining us on the trails at Fort Bayard outside Silver City. There’s brushing, logging-out, and lots of general maintenance to perform on mostly historical, user-made trails that were grandfathered into the system. We also have many signs to install, which will include digging post holes, setting the posts in cement, then mounting the signs; there are also a few that will be mounted to trees. We’ll probably break up into a few different crews, depending on how many volunteers we have, and split up to work different sections of a trail or different trails.

Our campsite will be close to the junction of the main Ft. Bayard road and the trailhead for the Big Tree Trail. It hasn’t been pinpointed yet, so the plan is to assemble at the Silver City Ranger Station, 3005 Camino del Bosque in Silver City (map attached) at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, then caravan out to the campsite. For those who prefer driving directly, let me know and I’ll give detailed directions after the campsite location has been established.

We’ll be working with Lynnette Brown of the Silver City Ranger District, and as those who’ve worked with Lynnette before know, she’ll provide volunteer-friendly accommodations such as a wall tent with wood-burning stove, a kitchen setup inside the tent, a water buffalo, and other amenities. (Sorry, no hot water for showers.) All tools will be provided as well.

It may (and probably will) be cold at night, so be sure to bring an extra blanket or two, as well as appropriate work clothes and gloves. Don’t forget your plate, bowl, cup, and eating utensils, as well as a folding chair and your favorite libations. Prepared meals will start with breakfast on Saturday (so bring your Friday dinner), and end with breakfast on Monday; makings for do-it-yourself lunches will be available from Saturday through Monday.

Please sign up by Monday, February 14. Contact Lowell to sign up, to ask for more information, or both.
