Map to Truchas Amphitheater

Tired of brown grass, dead looking trees, hot days and hot nights? Here's your reprieve. Five days in the Truchas Amphitheater area, just northwest of the Truchas Peaks, in the Pecos Wilderness is New Mexico's Shangri-La. The Rio Quemado waterfall cascades from the mica-laden Truchas into numerous rivulets, one foot wide and three feet deep.

Our journey begins Thursday, September 8 at 9:00 AM at the Española Ranger District, (located at 1710 N Riverside Dr in Española), where Jennifer Sublett is coordinating a USFS car pool to the trail head. (The trail head and parking lot are on private land, so space is limited.) We will hike approximately 3 miles on Trail 153 which begins about 5 miles from the village of Truchas. We will establish a base camp in the north shadow of North Truchas Peak. Our work will involve the re-opening of the trail as it crosses the saddle to Truchas Lakes.

This is an unsupported backpack, meaning volunteers are required to furnish their own food for the entire project. Tools and a latrine will be delivered via mule to the campsite prior to the project. The project leader will furnish a water filter for group use. This project is limited to 10 volunteers and those volunteers must stay for the entire 5 days. The hike out is Monday, September 12 when we will again car pool back to Española.

Please sign up by September 4 by contacting the project leader Kevin.
