Map to St. Peter's Dome

Come with us on this one-day trail maintenance project under the cliffs of scenic Sanchez Canyon in the Dome Wilderness of the Santa Fe National Forest's Jemez Ranger District. From a trailhead on Forest Road 289 we will hike approximately 2 miles along the southern part of Trail #118 through Piñon, Juniper, and Ponderosa habitat toward St. Peter’s Dome. Upon reaching the junction with the Turkey Spring Trail above Sanchez Canyon, we will work our way back down to the creek at the bottom, improving drainage and pruning brush and trees under the expert guidance of Forest Ranger Phyllis Martinez. Please dress according to the latest weather forecast and bring a pack with your own lunch and choice of liquids. Extra bottled water will be available at the trailhead.

Our meeting place is a relatively short commute from either Albuquerque or Santa Fe. Take I-25 to exit 264, then west on NM 22 past the Cochiti dam to the parking lot next to the Cochiti Convenience Store, arriving no later than 9:00 AM. (Note your mileage before you leave for the purpose of VFO reimbursement.) Coffee and pastries should be available in the store. Because of the condition of FR 289 and the possibility of its gate still being locked, we will consolidate into high-clearance vehicles for the approximately 4-mile drive to the trailhead.
