Map to TWA Canyon

Leave your tools and hard hat behind and take a break from all the trail work you have been doing. Join us for our first social hike! Meet like-minded volunteers and enjoy camaraderie on the trail! This is perhaps the most beautiful canyon on the west side of the Sandias. The vegetation is lush and a city escape is only miles from the trailhead. This is an area where a small plane went down in 1955 and a memorial is in place. Please respect the area as you would any hallowed ground. It is roughly 3.75 miles from the TH to the crash site. The trail gains approximately 2,200’ as it travels up the canyon and our pace will be moderate. You should come prepared for a fun day hike. Bring lots of water, snacks, and a lunch. Be prepared for any kind of weather from hot and sunny to cloudy and rainy. Because this canyon is somewhat sheltered, it can be cooler than you might expect. Learn more about this hike and possibly extending your day by visiting this link: http://www.trimbleoutdoors.com/ViewTrip/10974. You are welcome to go on, but our group will return the way we came in.

We will meet at the Elena Gallegos Open Space trailhead at 8:45AM and start hiking by 9AM. This is located at the end of Simms Park Road, which stretches east of Tramway between Academy and Paseo Del Norte. A $2 parking fee is required to be paid at the visitor entrance – correct change only.
